Card Check Brings 1,000 New Members in New Jersey

District 1 VP Chris Shelton reports that on February 7 New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine signed an Executive Order recognizing CWA as the Collective Negotiations representative for a group of over 1,000 community care residential providers of services to developmentally disabled adults. The recognition followed a card check where the NJ State Board of Mediation verified that a majority of the unit signed up with CWA. Locals 1037 and 1040 worked together over an extended period of time combining both traditional organizing and political work to reach their goal. They made hundreds of house visits across the State, signed up a majority, built a committee and then mobilized to get recognition.
