Verizon Workers Vote Strike Authorization

86% of Verizon workers voted over the last two weeks to authorize a strike if necessary. The contract expires at 12 midnight on Saturday August 1 and covers 39,000 CWA and IBEW represented telephone workers from Massachusetts to Virginia.

There continues to be no progress made at the bargaining table. If the Company wants a deal by the expiration of our Agreements and avoid the cost of a battle with us they should start getting serious at the bargaining table. The Company’s Regional Bargaining Committee still has not responded to a single Union proposal.

The Union continued to ask Verizon about safety issues involving work being done by Contractors. All members should remember that safety should be their #1 concern. The Union also raised concerns about the closing of the LPC stores which are now staffed with unqualified contractors.

This morning we met with the Company and rejected numerous sections of the Company’s proposal, including Job Security, Pensions, Force Adjustment Plan changes and more. We also reminded the Company that they have not yet responded to a single Union Proposal at the Regional Table. We told them we need our issues addressed.

Verizon Regional Bargaining Report #17

On Friday the Company responded to the Union’s request for information on call centers which we requested over two weeks earlier. After reviewing the information over the weekend we found that it was incomplete and incorrect. Today the Union criticized the Company’s committee for not providing all the data. The Union also blasted Verizon on the Company’s plan to go forward with the contracting of pole work in Suffolk County and possibly Albany, Syracuse, and Utica.

Today we presented the Company with a proposal dealing with Neutrality. We also requested additional information regarding costs associated with our collective bargaining agreements.

The Union passed several proposals regarding Health Care, Dental and Vision for active and retired members which are in deep contrast to the Company’s healthcare proposals which would raise healthcare costs for our members by up to 143%.
